The Lehtoranta estate, located on the shores of Lake Hympölä in the rural municipality of Sortavala, was home to Väinö and Hanna Poutiainen and their six children. The enemy seized the family’s beautiful home and the ancestral lands of Karelia’s song-filled region, beginning years of an evacuation journey that eventually ended by the glistening waters of Lake Vesankajärvi.
Although life took the children in different directions, they gathered for decades like a traditional Karelian extended family, returning each summer to this landscape reminiscent of the happy days of childhood in Sortavala. Today, the new Lehtoranta in Vesanka still preserves a glimpse of Karelia’s beauty with its verdant shores, abundant berry fields, and pristine waters. The ancient pines tell the stories of past generations, and the loon sings its wistful song amidst the glowing white water lilies. The enchanting nature surrounding Lehtoranta cradles it in a gentle embrace, where time stands still and the mind reaches perfect serenity.
Our villas—Airanne, Haavus, Helylä, Hympölä, and Rantue—are named after the villages of the rural municipality of Sortavala in honor of our family's roots. At the villas, you can still find pieces of the history of the Lehtoranta estate—Villa Airanne’s farmhouse table has journeyed with the family from Karelia to Vesanka, now offering our guests countless memorable moments around it.
